Would We Return?

Would we return
If once the gates which close upon the past
Were opened wide for us and if the dear
Remembered pathway stretched before us clear
To lead us back to youth's lost land at last,
Whereon life's April shadows lightly cast
Recalled the old sweet days of childish fear
With all their faded hopes and brought anear
The far-off streams in which our skies were glassed;
Did those lost dreams which wake the soul's sad yearning
But live once more and waited our returning,
Would we return?

Would we return
If love's enchantment held the heart no more
And we had come to count the wild sweet pain,
The fond distress, the lavish tears--but vain;
Had cooled the heart's hot wounds amidst the roar
Of mountain gales, or, on some alien shore
Worn out the soul's long anguish and had slain
At last the dragon of despair--if then the train
Of vanished years came back, and, as of yore,
The same voice called, and with soft eyes beguiling,
Our lost love beckoned, through time's gray veil smiling,
Would we return?

Once we had crossed to death's unlovely land
And trod the bloomless ways among the dead
Lone and unhappy; after years had fled
With twilight wings along that glimmering strand,
If then--an angel came with outstretched hand
To lead us back, and we recalled in dread
How soon the tears that once for us are shed
May flow for others--how like words in sand
Our memory fades away--how oft our waking
Might vex the living with the dead heart's breaking,
Would we return,--

Civil War soldiers?

In our research we've come across either a peculiar coincidence or an important piece of evidence which will help us get clearer picture of our distant relatives.

We find both a William Fox and an Elias Fox enlisting in the 13th Cavalry Regiment (Tennesseans) in 1864. William was mustered on the sixth of April, but Elias was not mustered. They are both listed as being 18 years old and privates in the Federal Military Rosters.

Our brothers William Fox and Elias Fox were purportedly much younger than these men in the rosters. William, in the records, was born 22 APRIL 1868 and Elias in January of 1870, so it doesn't seem probable or even possible that the boys joined the fighting before they were born. But maybe there's a connection in terms of namesake.

We still have so much to learn in terms of Civil War research and military research in general.

We did find out that some Illinois infantry and artillery men in the Civil War were listed with the Iowa calvaries and units.

THE LATE RAID!! ALL QUIET ON BORDER!!

"The excitement consequent the threatened Rebel Raid on Greene and adjoining counties has almost entirely subsided. The Rebels have disappeared from Morgantown, but are said to be still in the vicinity of Fairmont or Warren. On Thursday last, Major Showalter, in command of some 700 Union troops and a section of Artillery at Morgantown, expecting to open communications with the Railroad someplace west of Fairmont, sent a dispatch to Waynesburg for help.

"Our Committee of Safety immediately got our home forces in readiness and our Washington friends sent us a fine Company of Infantry under command of the gallant Captain Wishart. Before their arrival, however, news reached us that Major Showalter had evacuated Morgantown and was on his way to Wheeling via Uniontown. On Saturday morning, all imminent danger of a Rebel incursion having passed away, the Washington lads returned to their homes and our own people resumed their usual business occupations. At present, all is quiet, and all alarm allayed."

Snippets like this one are often cited in a quarterly called Cornerstone Clues which is a collection of history by the Cornerstone Genealogical Society in Waynesburg, PA. Cornerstone defies boundaries when it comes to learning about yesteryear and family tree. Seems like for various times in history, Pennsylvania had the bigger newspapers, so in those accounts West Virginia is often mentioned!
